Canadian stays that let you truly switch off
We check in, unpack and stay the night so you don't have to hope for the best. Independent, first-hand reviews of Canada's most restful retreats — a couple with a casino on site for when you'd rather turn the noise up.
Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise
Four retreats worth clearing your calendar for
Each of these we booked, paid for and slept in — then weighed for comfort, service, setting and that rare feeling of being genuinely looked after. Open any card for the full, honest review.
A little review desk with a very stubborn independence
MapleLeaf Retreats started in 2013 as a newsletter shared between friends and grew into one of the country's most-trusted guides to the Canadian stays actually worth the trip. We're not a booking engine, and no hotel chain owns a word of us.
Our writers pay their own way, keep their names off the reservation, and report on what really happens between check-in and check-out — the welcome, the quiet, the frayed edges nobody photographs. We never publish prices, we never trade a kind word for a commission, and every review carries the name of the person who slept there.
If a link on this site leads you to book a room, the property may pay us a small commission. That keeps our reviews free — and it has never once bought a better score.
How we stay independent →
What goes into a MapleLeaf review
The same unhurried, four-step routine sits behind every rating you'll read here.
We book anonymously
Rooms are reserved and paid for like any other guest's — no comps, no press rate, and no heads-up to the front desk.
We settle in
Our writer spends at least one full night testing the bed, the water pressure, the walls and the way the staff treat you on day two.
We listen widely
We read hundreds of recent guest reviews so a single dreamy (or dreadful) night never tips the scales on its own.
We say it plainly
A signed, first-person review with a clear verdict — full marks where they're earned, and honest words where they aren't.
Independent, on purpose
No pay-to-play
A hotel can't buy a rating, a ranking or a softer verdict. Scores are settled long before a single commission is counted.
Signed by real people
Every review carries the name of the writer who actually stayed — you can meet all three on our writers page.
No prices, ever
Rates shift by the hour and mislead more than they help. We describe the stay and send you to book directly at the source.
